The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak turned out to be the first luxury steel wristwatch after it hit the market in 1972. Designed by the iconic Gerald Genta, the watch was born during the Quartz crisis featuring a unique octagonal bezel. Although it was not received well initially, the timepiece managed to survive and gradually attained an iconic status in the watch industry.
Over the years, Audemars Piguet upgraded the Royal Oak collection elevating the standards. By 1977, the brand began offering these watches in yellow and white gold. And this iconic collection continues to allure collectors even after fifty years since its launch with its class and ingenuity.
However, Audemars Piguet had put its icon into the limelight again in 2021 by releasing some new Royal Oak watches. They are all set to excite AP’s fans by showcasing fresh designs, packing new movements and bearing attitudes. So let’s explore some of the best new Royal Oak watches to invest in 2021.

AP turned up with a new Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin that features an exquisite smoked green sunburst dial. This is the first watch to feature a 950 platinum case configuration measuring 39mm. However, the timepiece manages to balance the heft at only 8.1mm thickness.
Moreover, the 39mm full-platinum case houses the brand’s Calibre 2121 self-winding movement, powering the time and date.
The Swiss watchmaker also released a new sporty 41mm Royal Oak model for those who prefer less vibrant options. However, this new watch comes cased in an attractive 18ct pink gold.
However, Audemars Piguet used the integrated chronograph in Royal Oak for the first time with a flyback functionality. It allows the chronograph to restart without resetting or stopping it first.
The movement also features a zero setting mechanism that ensures every counter hand resets to zero instantaneously. Interestingly, you can see the movement this time via a sapphire case-back.
Moreover, the new Royal Oak Self-winding Chronograph has a colour matching alligator strap, offering a dressy yet sporty look.
This year, Audemars Piguet released five new Offshore models in three metal options – 18ct pink gold, titanium, and stainless steel. However, what makes these new watches significant is that they portray the first redesign of the Royal Oak Offshore since AP introduced the 44mm versions in the 2000s.
The dials flaunt a ‘Mega Tapisserie’ pattern and are available in grey, black, blue and taupe. Moreover, the watchmaker has also re-arranged the chronograph counters. You will notice the minute counter at 9 o’clock side and the hour counter at 3 o’clock, increasing legibility.
However, the new Royal Oak Offshore logo completes the dial. The five new models are powered by the latest integrated Calibre 4401 chronograph.
Those who love to add a little bit more flash to its outfit can opt for the new Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin diamond-set editions. AP offers these watches in 18ct white gold or 18ct pink gold, embellished in 1,102 diamonds on the bracelet and bezel.
However, the new Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin 39mm models feature the Petite Tapisserie dial styles in black or light blue. A glare-proof sapphire case-back showcases the Calibre 2121 movement powering the watches.
Audemars Piguet released the new stainless steel Royal Oak Offshore Diver in blue, grey and khaki. However, the watchmaker has also equipped the watches with an interchangeable strap system and a new Calibre 4308.
This automatic movement comes with an immediate jump date indication. It offers 60-hours of power reserve. Moreover, being a genuine diver’s timepiece, these Offshore Diver models are water-resistant up to 300m.
