The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Self-winding is a flagship collection within the brand’s portfolio. And perhaps the number of Royal Oak fans and collectors increased after AP introduced the Royal Oak Selfwinding with a flying tourbillon.
The latest Royal Oak Self-winding Flying Tourbillon series consists of three models and houses a newly developed Calibre 2950. However, this movement debuted in 2019 in the AP’s Code 11.59 collection. Let’s dig into the details more.
The three Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Self-winding Flying Tourbillon models feature a 41mm case diameter and an instantly recognisable octagonal bezel. However, two of the watches sport the signature ‘Tapisserie’ dial. One model comes with an 18ct rose gold case with a smoked grey sunburst dial and rose gold hour markers and hands. The other one features a steel case, smoked blue sunburst dial with white gold markers and hands.
However, the third model sports a titanium case, a slate grey sandblasted snailed-pattern dial. And all the three watches proudly display a big aperture at 6 o’clock featuring the flying tourbillon.
Another noteworthy feature you can see on the dial is the 3D Audemars Piguet logo beneath the 12-hour marker. The watchmaker made the logo using thin gold layers via a chemical process known as galvanic growth. And AP used this for the first time in the celebrated Royal Oak lineup.
This chemical process is same as the 3D printing. Expert artisans use hair-thin legs to fix each letter of the logo on the dial. Now:
The Calibre 2950 powers the new Royal Oak Self-winding Flying Tourbillon watches. However, the movement combines a flying tourbillon affixed to the plate on one side instead of two. Thus, it looks visually spirited from the front. Moreover, it is made of 270 parts and includes 27 jewels.
The movement offers a power reserve of 65 hours and beats at 21,600vph. The watches come with a hand-finished tourbillon cage and rose gold open-worked rotor. However, the movement shows several top-notch finished in ‘cotes de Geneve’ and hand-polishing satin-brushed on the chamfers. And the fascinating fact is that you can glimpse all this high-end craftsmanship via a sapphire case back.
Like the cases, the bracelets also flaunt a similarly high degree of hand-finishing. They will sit securely on your wrist, thanks to the brand’s exclusive triple folding clasp.
